The News: NY Daily News Airplane NC13840
Stinson Reliant Aviation Photo 8x10
Picture Newspaper's Plane | 1979 MDC St. Louis PrintDESCRIPTIONThis 8x10 black and white photograph shows a high-wing cabin monoplane lettered THE NEWS on the fuselage, with a winged camera emblem and the slogan "New York's Picture Newspaper," the tagline the New York Daily News carried from 1920 to 1991. The tail reads NC-13840, and three parallel stripes run the length of the fuselage. The strut layout, gear fairings, braced tail and fluted radial engine cowling are consistent with the straight-wing Stinson Reliant, the cabin monoplane Stinson introduced in 1933 and built in more than 1,300 examples through 1941. The photographer worked close to the airplane, which puts the lettering, the winged camera emblem and the registration front and center.Newspapers of the era used aircraft to get photographers and film to the presses, and this airplane carries the branding of the paper best known for its pictures. No owner, pilot or date caption appears on the print, so this listing sticks to what the photograph itself shows. From the AITKEN COLLECTION. The image is clean with a good tonal range, and no creases, tears, stains or fold lines are visible in the scans. A few small dust specks and faint hairline surface marks show in the sky and foreground areas, and the focus is slightly soft in places, which comes from the original photograph and not from wear. The edges visible in the scans are straight and clean. There is no writing on the front. The reverse shows the blue MDC ST. LOUIS and OCT 2 1979 stamps, a lighter stamped line noting negatives not filed, and the typed Aitken Collection label.
