Thor Epic Collection Vol. 8: War of the Gods, a fantastic trade paperback collecting classic 1970s Marvel stories by writer Len Wein and legendary artist John Buscema. This comprehensive collection includes several major multi-issue storylines and standalone chapters, specifically compiling Thor (1966) #242–259, Thor Annual #5, and Marvel Spotlight (1971) #30. Some of the standout chapters and arcs featured in this book include \"The Temple at the End of Time\" (where Thor travels through time alongside Zarrko the Tomorrow Man), \"The Fury of Firelord\" (a brutal showdown in the jungles of Latin America), \"If Asgard Should Perish...!\" (the cosmic rebellion against the ultimate threat of Mangog), and \"A Dragon at the Gates!\" (Thor\'s dark quest into Hel to rescue his father, Odin). The book culminates in the giant-sized Annual chapter, \"War of the Gods!\", tracking a massive, action-packed clash between Thor and Hercules. The BONUS BOOK is Thor Vol. 2 \"Prey\" which is absolutely worth reading, many fans and critics consider it the best standalone story arc of Donny Cates’ entire time writing the character. Prey stands completely on its own as a self-contained fast-paced, dark cosmic thriller.Brilliant Horror Twist: Cates takes Dr. Donald Blake—traditionally a generic, wholesome silver-age secret identity—and transforms the story to a dark deconstruction of classic Thor lore, focusing on the horrific return of Thor\'s classic human alter-ego, Dr. Insane is psychological, tragic, and incredibly compelling.High Stakes & Real Consequences: Unlike many mainstream superhero arcs where everything resets at the end, Prey feels genuinely dangerous. Blake inflicts brutal, lasting damage on the Thor mythos and supporting characters.Shining Supporting Cast: Because Thor spends a good portion of the story trapped, characters like Jane Foster (Valkyrie), Beta Ray Bill, Loki, and even Throg (Frog Thor) step into the spotlight and get fantastic moments to shine.Stellar Artwork: The visual work by Aaron Kuder and Nic Klein is highly praised for capturing both the vibrant magic of Asgard and the deeply unsettling, dark tone of Blake\'s rampage.
