Signed Autograph Letter (1906), eloquently expressing condolences to Col. William Church on the death of his brother, Francis P. Church (literary defender of Santa Claus).
Autograph Letter signed: "Thos. W. Lamont", 3 pages (integral leaf), 4¾x7¾ folded, 9¾x7¾ open flat. West Point, New York 1906 April 12. On letterhead of the US Military Academy to "My Dear Col. Church". In full: "It is not possible for an outsider to estimate the measure of loss that has come to you in the severing of such relations as those that bound together your brother and yourself for these many years, but it is enough to know that it is threefold - the man, the brother, and the follow worker - and that in all three the measure was full. I never knew your brother, but in a time of ferment and negation such as ours I feel a sense of personal loss whenever there leave us a man who has not lost the coordinates of his soul and who stands for something more nourishing than the philosophy of the comfortable and the incredulous. It is not a small thing in the afternoon of our labor when the twilight years draw out, to lose the clasp of a brother's hand, whose brotherhood was so many sided; and, although it was not given me to know a brother's love, I can conceive something of your grief and in that conception offer you my hand. Sincerely yours". Thomas William Lamont (1870-1948), who entered banking in New York City in 1903, became a partner in J.P. Morgan & Co. in 1911. An economic advisor to Presidents Wilson and Hoover, and one of two Treasury Department representatives at the Treaty of Versailles negotiations (1919). When J.P. Morgan & Co. was reorganized in 1943, Lamont became the Chairman of the Board of the firm. A noted philanthropist, Lamont construction of Harvard's Lamont Library, and his widow left their Hudson River residence for Columbia's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. The letter's recipient was Colonel William C. Church (1836-1917), a journalist who had served in the Union Army during the Civil War, founding the Army and Navy Journal in 1863. His deceased brother was Francis P. Church (1839-1906), co-editor of the Army and Navy Journal and of another Church project, Galaxy magazine (1868-1978), subsequently merged with the Atlantic Monthly. While writing for the New York Sun, Francis Church had penned the famous editorial reply, "Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus." (1897). 1 vertical 2 horizontal fold creases. Lightly toned and creased. Pin-sized stain at lower edge. Otherwise fine condition.
