A lovely vintage set of ten Japanese lacquerware plates by Zohiko of Kyoto, presented in their original wooden storage box with a hand-brushed signature on the lid. Zohiko has been crafting fine urushi lacquer in Kyoto since 1661, and each piece here carries the maker's red seal on the underside.
Each plate in the set features a different hand-painted maki-e style motif — folding fans, ferns, maple leaves, blossoms, pine, and other classic Japanese seasonal designs — in gold, green, and red over a glossy black ground, framed by a warm russet rim. The undersides show a brushed wood-grain texture that gives these pieces wonderful depth and character.
The plates measure approximately 6.75" in diameter — an ideal size for desserts, sushi, tea sweets, or small appetizers. They are equally at home displayed on a stand or open shelf, and the mixed patterns make a wonderful conversation piece when entertaining.
The set is in very good vintage condition with only light surface wear consistent with age and careful use; no chips or cracks noted. The wooden box shows minor storage wear, and the original blue wrapping cloths are included as shown.
Packed with great care and shipped out quickly. Please see photos for dimensions and additional details.
