Rutherford B. Hayes signed and dated Executive Mansion card:
$750.00

ExecutiveMansion card, boldly signed in the center “R.B. Hayes” and dated “16 Mch 1878”. A clean and well-preservedwith light toning and the faintest yellowing in spots at the extremeedges-likely from prior framing- with tiny tape remnants in the corners on thereverse side from mounting.

Hayesused Executive Mansion cards to respond to autograph requests or write somebrief notes. The autograph cards were all signed “R.B. Hayes” with very fewbearing any inscriptions or dates. This example stands out for thelarger-than-average signature and the uncommon addition of a date, making it asuperior Executive Mansion example for any collection.

Thedate offers a glimpse into Hayes’s generous mood. Saturday March 16, 1878, wasa mild spring weekend, a chance to further reflect on his first year in office. It was a Saturday on a beautiful spring weekend. His diary entry from theprevious day notes the arrival and hanging of his full-length portrait byartist William Garl Browne “…generally regarded as the best ever taken ofme.” (It now hangs at the HayesPresidential Library.) That weekend,First Lady Lucy Hayes and their two sons departed for Ohio, leaving thepresident and his 11-year old daughter Fanny in the Executive Mansion.
