Beyond Courage: Surviving Vietnam as a POW — Return to the Hanoi Hilton

Unusual privately produced comb-bound archival/presentation compilation extensively documenting the career and activities of decorated Vietnam veteran Major Ron M. Miller, his involvement in Vietnam veterans affairs, POW/MIA advocacy, American-Vietnamese reconciliation efforts, and the documentary Beyond Courage: Surviving Vietnam as a POW.

This is not a conventionally published book. No publisher, copyright page, table of contents, index or conventional pagination has been located. Instead, the volume consists of a large collection of reproduced photographs, correspondence, newspaper articles, biographical material, organizational documents, film/project information, inscriptions and related historical material.

Much of the compilation centers directly upon Ron M. Miller, a decorated U.S. Army Vietnam veteran and helicopter pilot who later became Executive Director of the Georgia Veterans Leadership Program and was involved extensively in veterans affairs, POW/MIA issues and American-Vietnamese reconciliation.

Miller was also involved in the production of the documentary Beyond Courage: Surviving Vietnam as a POW, which documented former American prisoners of war returning to Vietnam and the sites of their captivity, including the prison Americans famously called the Hanoi Hilton.

Material represented within the compilation includes:
  • Ron M. Miller biographical and military-career material
  • Beyond Courage: Surviving Vietnam as a POW documentary material
  • Hanoi Hilton / American POW material
  • American-Vietnamese reconciliation activities
  • American-Vietnamese Reconciliation Project / related organizational material
  • Vietnam Reconciliation Project documentation
  • photographs and correspondence involving General Raymond G. Davis, USMC, Medal of Honor
  • correspondence involving Vietnamese General Võ Nguyên Giáp
  • photographs and material involving President Ronald Reagan
  • photographs/material involving President George H.W. Bush
  • references to General William C. Westmoreland
  • correspondence involving Mary Frances Thibaudeau and Alex Wells
  • Secofilm correspondence from Hanoi
  • Vietnam government and veterans-related material
  • POW/MIA advocacy and National League of Families-related material
  • newspaper clippings, professional correspondence and project documentation
  • numerous reproduced photographs bearing period inscriptions, annotations and identifications

One particularly notable reproduced document is a 1993 letter addressed directly to Ron Miller from General Võ Nguyên Giáp, discussing veterans, reconciliation and related contacts.

Other reproduced materials include photographs inscribed to Miller by prominent political and military figures and correspondence documenting Miller's professional relationships and veterans activities.

Possible relationship to Vietnam Special Flight, Inc.

The contents also bear a noteworthy relationship to subjects later treated by Miller in his 2012 book Vietnam Special Flight, Inc.

That book includes chapters devoted to Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, General Raymond G. Davis, General William Westmoreland, John McCain, Beyond Courage: Surviving Vietnam as a POW, the National League of Families of American Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia, and other people and projects represented within this compilation.

The book additionally concludes with a section titled “Photos and documents.”

Because of this substantial overlap, the present compilation may have served as a personal, working, reference, presentation or source dossier connected with Miller's later biographical work. However, its precise purpose and compiler have not been definitively established, and it is not being represented as a confirmed manuscript or book-production archive.

Provenance / Attribution Note

The unusually concentrated presence of documents personally addressed to Miller, photographs depicting Miller and his associates, Miller's biographical material, and records of projects in which Miller participated strongly suggest an origin within Miller's personal/professional archival circle.

However, no ownership inscription or other definitive evidence establishing this particular physical volume as Miller's personal copy has been located. It is therefore offered as a Ron M. Miller-associated archival/presentation compilation, rather than represented as definitively owned or assembled personally by Miller.

Autograph Note

Please note that many signed photographs, letters and handwritten inscriptions appearing in the volume are reproductions of source documents or photographs incorporated into the compilation.

They are not being offered or authenticated as original autographs of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, General Võ Nguyên Giáp, General Raymond G. Davis or other individuals represented.

Page after page documents the extraordinary postwar world inhabited by Vietnam veteran Ron M. Miller: former American POWs returning to the sites of their captivity; American and Vietnamese veterans attempting reconciliation; correspondence crossing former enemy lines; meetings with senior military figures; POW/MIA advocacy; documentary filmmaking; presidential administrations; veterans organizations; and the personal relationships formed through decades of work on behalf of Vietnam veterans.

Unlike a conventional published history, the volume reads as an accumulated documentary record—photographs, letters, biographies, newspaper accounts, project materials and personal associations gathered together to establish the people, events and relationships behind that work.

Of particular interest is the substantial overlap between the subjects preserved here and those Miller later chose to document in his 2012 book, Vietnam Special Flight, Inc. Whether this compilation was created specifically in preparation for that publication remains unknown, but the parallel provides intriguing context for an unusual surviving archival object.

An uncommon piece of Vietnam veterans and reconciliation history whose greatest value lies in the documentary relationship among its contents rather than any individual page.
