Ringling Bros RBBB Native American War Bonnet Drum RARE 1950s - Original Photo:
$75.00

An original 5x7" vintage photo (NOT a modern reprint) from a series of unpublished vernacular images documenting the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus over an approximately 15-year span (mainly 1941-55) taken by and from the estate of Chicago photographer Frank R. Parker.

This photo is from a fascinating archive of never before seen personal photos taken of the Ringling Bros circus that we acquired from a major sale house. It is likely the only copy of this photo.

Photo Overview

A vintage black and white snapshot of a Native American elder in full ceremonial dress, seated on the stone steps of a rustic building while beating a small hand drum. He wears a sweeping eagle-feather war bonnet with ermine-style pendants, a polka dot shirt, fringed buckskin leggings, beaded moccasins, and a wristwatch, a small modern detail that grounds the moment in the mid-20th century. Two women and two children in period clothing lean in behind him, watching closely as he sings or speaks.

The photograph comes from a previously unpublished archive of personal images documenting the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, taken over roughly fifteen years, mainly in the 1940s and 1950s, by Chicago photographer Frank R. Parker. Parker photographed the circus world from a fan\'s vantage point, capturing performers, crowds, and the cultural attractions surrounding the show. This print is likely the only copy in existence, offering an unusual candid look at Native American performance and the audiences it drew during the golden age of the traveling circus.

Historical Notes

Native American performers were a recurring part of the big top and Wild West tradition that Ringling inherited from Barnum & Bailey and the Buffalo Bill era, and they continued to appear with circuses and allied tourist attractions into the postwar years. Within a few years of this snapshot, the traveling circus world changed dramatically: in July 1956 Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey gave its last performance under canvas and moved permanently into indoor arenas, ending the tented era Parker spent years documenting. Live Native American cultural presentations of this style largely faded from circus programs as audiences and attitudes shifted, making candid images like this one an increasingly scarce record. Ringling itself closed in 2017 before returning in a reimagined form in 2023, without animals or the traditional pageantry seen in Parker\'s archive.

Print analysis

This is a gelatin silver print on period photographic paper with the tonal range, paper surface, and clothing details consistent with a print made at the time the photograph was taken in the late 1940s or early 1950s. The back shows black album paper residue, indicating it was once mounted in a personal scrapbook, consistent with an amateur photographer\'s own contemporary print. No half tone dot pattern is present. This is a Type 1 original photograph.
