[RICHMOND, VIRGINIA—EDGAR ALLAN POE]. OLD STONE HOUSE REAL PHOTO POSTCARD. Circa 1922.Vintage real photo postcard depicting Richmond’s historic Old Stone House on East Main Street, later incorporated into the Edgar Allan Poe Museum. The photograph shows the eighteenth-century stone dwelling in its earlier urban setting, tightly flanked by adjoining commercial buildings, with its rough stone façade, shuttered windows, central entrance, and dormered roof clearly visible. Image marked“© 1922”at lower right. Printed onAZO photographic postcard stock with undivided back; unused and without postal markings.
The Old Stone House is recognized by the Poe Museum as Richmond’s oldest surviving residential building. Although Edgar Allan Poe never lived there, the property later became the nucleus of the memorial complex established in his honor. The Poe Museum opened to the public in1922—the same year indicated on the present photograph. Related early postcard views of the house are preserved in Virginia Commonwealth University’s“Rarely Seen Richmond”postcard collection, including examples identifying the site as“Old Stone House, Richmond, Va. Main near 20th.”
Light age toning and minor edge and corner wear, including a small crease at upper right. Image remains strong and well defined.Very good.
An evocative early photographic view of one of Richmond’s best-known historic structures, apparently dating to the formative year of the Poe Museum itself. Of particular interest to collectors of Edgar Allan Poe, Richmond and Virginia history, historic architecture, and early real photo postcards.
