She is a venerated Eastern Orthodox saint, traditionally depicted holding a cross and apples sent to her from Paradise by Saint John the Evangelist.
The gold lettering at the bottom corner reads Άγιον Όρος (Agion Oros), which translates to "Holy Mountain"—the common Greek name for Mount Athos.This inscription serves as a mark of origin, indicating that the icon was painted in the monastic workshops on Mount Athos in northeastern Greece.
