Named after Karađorđe Petrović, founder of the Karađorđević dynasty, the order was awarded for distinguished military and civil merit and occupies an important place in the history of Serbian and Yugoslav royal decorations.

Today, original examples are highly sought after by collectors of Serbian Royal Orders, Kingdom of Serbia medals, Kingdom of Yugoslavia decorations, Balkan orders and European royal decorations.
