[ Franz von Papen (1879–1969)was a prominent and controversial German politician, diplomat, and military officer during the Weimar Republic and Third Reich. After serving as Chancellor of Germany in 1932, he played a central role in the political maneuvering that led to the appointment of Adolf Hitler as Chancellor in 1933, briefly serving as Vice-Chancellor. He later served as Germany's Ambassador to Austria and Turkey. Following World War 2, von Papen was tried by the International Military Tribunal at the Nuremberg Trials on charges of crimes against peace and was ultimatelyacquittedby the court in 1946. This historical item provides a tangible link to one of the most critical figures of 20th-century European history.]
