Der Froys Handbukh: Der Praktisher Kokh-Bukh (The Woman's Handbook: The Practical Cook-Book)
By Adella Kean Zametkin
Published by the author, Jamaica, N.Y. City, 1930
First Edition · 648 pages · Text in Yiddish
A scarce first edition of a landmark work in early Yiddish women's literature. Adella Kean Zametkin (1863–1931) wrote the long-running column "Fun a froy tsu froyen" (From a Woman to Women) for the New York Yiddish daily Der Tog. She was married to Michael Zametkin, a founding editor of the Jewish Daily Forward, and was the mother of Laura Z. Hobson, later the author of Gentleman's Agreement.
This 648-page handbook — part health and hygiene guide, part practical cookbook, part household encyclopedia — was written for Jewish immigrant women adapting to American domestic life. It is specifically cited by the Yiddish Book Center as a notable example of early 20th-century Yiddish women's and domestic literature, covering childcare, nutrition, home economics, and recipes.
Bound in gilt-stamped cognac cloth with a frontispiece portrait of the author and her handwritten-style facsimile signature caption.
Condition notes: Binding solid, spine gilt bright and legible. Water staining runs through the first several leaves only (title page, portrait, copyright page, table of contents) — text remains fully readable, and the staining does not extend through the body of the book. Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the item description.
A genuinely rare piece of Yiddish-American and Jewish women's history — well suited to Judaica collections, women's studies research libraries, or collectors of early 20th-century immigrant literature.
Ships carefully packed with full insurance.
From the Chapter & Vintage collection — old things, new chapters.
