$19.90

Rare 1” Phytosaur Tooth – Redondasaurus – Redonda Formation – Quay County, New Mexico – Late Triassic — Up for sale is an impressive 1\" fossil phytosaur tooth from the Redonda Formation of Quay County, New Mexico, dating to the Late Triassic, roughly 220 million years ago. The Redonda Formation is particularly famous for Redondasaurus, a large, highly derived phytosaur that is well documented from these deposits; phytosaurs are also among the most common large vertebrates known from the formation. Although they looked remarkably similar to crocodiles, phytosaurs belonged to a separate lineage of archosauriform reptiles and are especially recognizable by their nostrils positioned high on the skull near the eyes rather than at the end of the snout. These large semiaquatic predators occupied the rivers, lakes, and shorelines of Late Triassic New Mexico, using elongated jaws armed with numerous conical teeth to capture prey. At 1 inches, this is a substantial isolated tooth from one of North America’s classic Triassic reptile localities. Because isolated Redonda Formation teeth cannot always be confidently identified to genus, I would conservatively list it as Phytosaur indet. (cf. Redondasaurus) rather than guarantee Redondasaurus. The exact 1\" fossil shown in the listing photographs is the specimen you will receive—an excellent addition for collectors of Triassic reptiles, phytosaurs, New Mexico fossils, and early archosaur evolution.
