This 1881 Sexennial Record is highly significant as it contains the early alumni record for John Wesley Manning (1857–1922). Born into slavery in North Carolina, Manning escaped to New Haven with his family during the Civil War. He went on to graduate from Yale College in 1881, making him one of the earliest identified Black graduates in Yale University's history. Following his time at Yale, Manning became a highly prominent educator and pioneering high school principal in Knoxville, Tennessee. This booklet stands as an important, privately printed artifact documenting early African American higher education and Ivy League history.CONDITION:
Excellent condition. Please see all photos to further determine condition. The blue binding string is intact though one string has broken. The cover shows authentic age toning and light edge wear consistent with a 130+ year old paper item. Interior pages are complete with no major tears or heavy staining visible.
