Offering a scarce & highly-sought, original 19th century pair of antique gilt brass and marble candlesticks/candleholders depicting the Bigelow Chapel that was built inside the famous Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Mass. located near Harvard University.
The candlesticks just under 14" to the candle cup opening and are affixed to their original marble bases. The marble bases measure 4" x 7" and one base is 1/2" taller than the other, although barely noticeable and are definitely from the same set and have not been "put together".The back of the candleholders are embossed and have the maker's name, W. F. Shaw of Boston and the patent date of Dec. 18, 1849.
They are in very good condition and have some expected age wear. The crystal prisms are antique replacements, I believe, because they are a pale amber color and not clear. I have owned these for at least 30 years. There is one teeny opening in one of the stamped brass near the chapel "roof" but I just wanted to mention them for accuracy.
There is a fantastic book entitled, "Nineteenth Century Lighting" by H. Parrott Bacot and this design is pictured on page 188. These candleholders are considered Gothic in design. Please see all my photos and ask me if you would like additional ones. **The lamp between the candle sticks is not part of this sale.**
Please message me if you have any questions at all. I am always happy to help! I have decades if experience in 18th & 19th century American antiques and decorative arts, and will pack these as carefully for shipping as I would want someone to do for me.
Thank you for taking the time to visit my listings and I hope you will consider adding me to your favorite sellers
