This is an exceptional and highly collectible pair of authentic turn-of-the-century Villeroy and Boch Mettlach etched stoneware plaques, presented in their original antique ornate steel frames. The set includes mold number 2623 featuring a cavalier with a serving tray and pitcher, and mold number 2626 depicting a cavalier drinking from a stein. Both pieces boast the rare, premium green underglaze Mercury helmet factory export stamp alongside the incised Abbey tower mark. Plaque 2623 features a 1900 date code and two original mounting holes. Plaque 2626 is an incredible piece of factory history, featuring a documented production error where a master artisan physically lined out an incorrect 2625 stamp and hand-corrected it to 2626 prior to firing, featuring a rare quality control code and four mounting holes. Both ceramic faces are in beautiful condition with crisp details, housed securely in their matching original period metal frames. This archival-tier matching set is a dream find for serious Mettlach and German stoneware collectors
