In 1915, San Diego hosted a massive world\'s fair in BalboaPark to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal and put San Diego on the map.To keep visitors entertained, the exposition featured a long strip of boardwalkattractions and midways called \"The Isthmus\".
\"The Isthmus\" was the dedicated amusement zone ormidway at the exposition. Named in honor of the Isthmus of Panama to celebratethe completion of the Panama Canal, this half-mile stretch of attractionsoccupied an area that is now covered by the San Diego Zoo parking lot.
It served as the \"fun zone\" of the fair, featuringmore than 60 individual attractions, rides, and exhibits. Some of the mostnotable features along the street included the \'49 Camp was one of several attractions and was an OldWest-themed attraction that recreated a California Gold Rush mining town. Itwas the most highly attended and popular attraction on the Isthmus, completewith mock gambling and dancing ladies, which drew both massive crowds andcomplaints from local religious groups.
Other themed attractions included The Painted Desert, alsoknown as the Indian Village. Chinatown, which was a replica village thatfeatured an underground \"Joss House\" meant to simulate an opium den,alongside a spinning disk ride called \"The Toadstool\".
Rides & Menageries also filled the street witha Ferris Wheel, a carousel, Thompson\'s Racing Coaster which was advertised asthe largest roller coaster in the world, and a variety of exotic animaldisplays, including the Cawston Ostrich Farm. An interest note was that theexotic animal exhibits left behind on the Isthmus after the exposition closedultimately provided the foundation for the establishment of the world-famous SanDiego Zoo.
CONDITION -FAIR/ NEAR GOOD. Used, folded, edge wear, chipping and discoloring and spotting seen; a well used bill. Colors and graphics are still clear and solid all writing is legible and over all a nice example of a bill used for what it was designed for...fun at the exposition.
