USS Virginia helped carry Theodore Roosevelt’s Great White Fleet around the world in 1907–1909, when sixteen American battleships crossed oceans to demonstrate the country’s growing naval reach. This postcard depicts that veteran in her later cage-mast configuration.
Virginia’s career ended in a very different demonstration of military power. On September 5, 1923, the retired battleship was sunk by Army aircraft during bombing trials off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. A ship that had represented American battleship strength became a target in experiments testing the destructive potential of aerial bombing.
This original color printed postcard is captioned “U.S.S. Battleship Virginia” and numbered 6507. It shows her three funnels, cage masts and distinctive stacked gun turrets. The reverse contains printed specifications for the ship’s machinery, dimensions, crew and armament.
Virginia’s September 5, 1923 sinking is documented by the Naval History and Heritage Command.
