Original c.1900 RMS Campania Cunard Diamond Jubilee Naval Review Postcard UK
DESCRIPTION
Original early printed postcard showing Cunard’s RMS Campania during the June 26, 1897, Diamond Jubilee Naval Review at Spithead. Campania served as a viewing vessel for members of Parliament, government officials, invited guests, and other spectators. The scene shows the liner among decorated warships, steam launches, and sailing craft.
The printed caption describes Campania as a 12,950-ton, 30,000-horsepower “Armed Cruiser.” This likely refers to the ship’s construction under an arrangement allowing the British government to requisition or adapt certain merchant vessels for naval use; it does not prove that Campania operated as an armed cruiser during the review.
Contemporary parliamentary records indicate that approximately 1,800 people were aboard, including about 800 MPs and their guests. Passenger totals and the reported composition vary slightly between sources. Queen Victoria did not personally sail through the fleet; the Prince of Wales represented her aboard Victoria and Albert II. Contemporary accounts commonly cite 21 battleships and 56 cruisers, while the frequently reported total of approximately 165 British warships in four lines should be treated as a reported figure rather than a fully verified count.
The review is also associated with Charles Parsons’ experimental Turbinia, whose high-speed demonstration helped publicize steam-turbine propulsion. Sources differ on the exact timing and circumstances of her movements in relation to the formal review.
Campania entered Cunard service in 1893 and was among the largest and fastest North Atlantic liners of her period. She set a westbound transatlantic speed record during her first year, was requisitioned during World War I, and converted into HMS Campania, a seaplane carrier used for aviation trials and Grand Fleet operations. She sank in the Firth of Forth on November 5, 1918, after breaking loose or dragging anchor in severe weather and colliding with other British warships. Her wreck is protected under United Kingdom heritage legislation.
