An original vintage press photograph, a sharp group portrait of seven uniformed police officers posed in two rows on the front steps of a brick, columned public building. A genuine period photographic print, not a reproduction.
The officers wear handsome double-breasted winter greatcoats with two rows of light buttons, peaked caps with shield badges, diagonal Sam Browne belts, and shield-style breast badges; several carry holstered revolvers, and all wear riding breeches and tall leather boots — the classic look of a 1920s motorcycle, traffic, or patrol squad. A wonderful study of early American law-enforcement uniforms, insignia, and sidearms.
Verso markings: the back carries the photographer's printed credit/restriction stamp:
"This picture is sold to and received by the purchaser upon the express condition and understanding that it shall not be published in any newspaper or magazine without the written consent of the KNIGHT-MORRIS PHOTO SYNDICATE, 614 Central Avenue, East Orange, N.J. — Phone Orange 9…" along with a pencil file number ("5-196 / 06"). The East Orange, N.J. syndicate origin points to a New Jersey department (Essex County area).
