Pair of antique “Old Ironsides” cast iron bookends, dating to approximately 1925.
Each bookend features a detailed relief of the USS Constitution, famously known as Old Ironsides, sailing through rough seas. “OLD IRONSIDES” is cast into the upper portion of the design.
These are made of cast iron with an aged bronzed/patinated finish and have the distinctive textured/dimpled backs associated with this design.
The design is referenced in Kuritzky & DeCosta’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Bookends, page 310, with a reported Rarity Level 5.
These were acquired from the estate sale of a longtime collector.Condition: Good antique condition with visible age-related wear, patina, oxidation, finish loss and discoloration consistent with approximately 100 years of age. No obvious major cracks or breaks observed. One bookend has a small casting opening/void along the lower base area, visible in the photos. They have not been aggressively cleaned or refinished.
Please review all photos carefully, as they are part of the condition description.
Great collectible pair for anyone interested in antique bookends, nautical décor, maritime history, USS Constitution memorabilia or early cast iron collectibles.
