This vintage U.S. Navy VA-155 “Silver Foxes” ATKRON ONE FIVE FIVE squadron patch appears unused and has been exceptionally well preserved. It does not show evidence of having been sewn onto a garment.
Measures approximately 4 5/8 inches tall × 4 3/8 inches wide.
Features the VA-155 Silver Foxes insignia with a silver fox head against a black sky, yellow star and lightning bolts, yellow setting sun, blue water, and silver scroll embroidered “ATKRON ONE FIVE FIVE.”
This specific Silver Fox insignia was officially approved by the U.S. Navy on July 24, 1987 for the reestablished Attack Squadron 155. VA-155 operated the Grumman A-6E and KA-6D Intruder from 1987 through 1993 and participated in combat operations during the Gulf War.
The patch is embroidered on twill with a merrowed edge and a gray fibrous cloth-style stabilizer backing. Its approximately 4 5/8 × 4 3/8 inch dimensions and construction correspond closely with documented 1987 VA-155 squadron patches and differ from the smaller plastic-backed modern reproductions currently produced.
Based on the design, dimensions, construction and comparison with documented examples, this is being represented as an original late-1980s period VA-155 squadron patch, likely circa 1987.
