Grand Portage National Monument is located at the extreme northeast corner of Minnesota, on the north shore of Lake Superior, where Minnesota meets Ontario, Canada. Grand Portage NM preserves an 8.5 mile footpath which bypasses a set of waterfalls and rapids on the Pigeon River before it flows into Lake Superior. An essential link between the Hudson Bay to the north and the St Lawrence River to the east, it connected fur traders from the north and west with their markets to the east.
"Gichi Onigaming" translates from the French to mean "The Great Carrying Place". Imagine the canoes, heavy with furs, that needed to be hoisted onto the backs of men, mules, and sleds or travois to make this trek to the next great body of water.
