Original NASA Space Shuttle Orbiter Artifact
* Vintage NASA Space Shuttle Orbiter Vehicle, Crew Cabin Sleeping Quarters Flight Hardware, Astronaut Sleeping Pod Station Personal Air Diffuser Ventillation Orifice Assembly Unit.
This Space Shuttle flight artifact was designed to direct and modulate the air circulated for astronauts in the sleeping quarters section of the orbiter's crew cabin. Each of the astronauts' sleeping pods or sleep stations was equipped with one of these air diffuser vents providing fresh filtered air in the snug environs of theirsleepinghabitat.
Orbiter Crew Cabin Sleeping Quarters Three & Four Tier Sleep Stations:The four-tier sleep station consists of four horizontal bunks each of which contains an operational sleeping bag. The bunks are constructed of machined aluminum and Kevlar and provide for light and sound attenuation and privacy. The sliding doors allow ingress/egress into the bunks. The side panels, door, and support for the bottom bunk are removable for access to under-floor stowage. To gain access to floor compartment, the crewmember needs to remove the bottom bunk side panel and door. For ground servicing or contingency on-orbit access to under-floor compartment F (the wet trash compartment), the individual needs to remove the bottom bunk lower aft inboard panel at the mid-deck floor. To achieve this, the following procedure must be performed: Open the bottom sleep station door past the center vertical support beam.
Thethree-tier sleep station consists of three horizontal bunks. The components of the three-tier sleep station are the same as those of the four-tier sleep station. Lights are provided at the head of each sleep station. Ventilating air enters through an air diffuser at the head of each station and exits into the Orbiter cabin through agrille at the foot of each station. The adjustable air diffuser will permit a ventilation airflow of up to 20 ft3/min (0.57 m3/min). Personal stowage provisions are also provided on the starboard wall of each sleep station.
Rigid Sleep Station System: If all crewmembers are sleeping simultaneously, at least two crewmembers will wear headsets. To ensure reception of ground calls and C&W (caution & warning) alarms, one headset will be connected to the Sleep STA Tones outlet and the other to any other communications outlet.- Source: NASA (Shuttle Flight Operations Manual, Volume 12 - Crew Systems, Mission Operations Directorate, Training Division, 1987)
