This is an exceptionally rare Montblanc Meisterstück Artisan Collection “Magic Beauty – The Ugly Duckling” 164 Ballpoint Pen, released in the early 2000s in honor of Hans Christian Andersen and inspired by his beloved fairy tale The Ugly Duckling.
This whimsical yet luxurious creation is widely regarded as one of Montblanc’s most imaginative and artistic designs.
Design & Artistic Details
- The “Magic Beauty” edition captures the story of transformation with extraordinary craftsmanship:
- The cap features a beautiful craquelé enamel finish, symbolizing a cracked eggshell.
- Emerging from the “shell” is a sculpted solid 18K gold duck beak, the defining element that gives this model its “Ugly Duckling” nickname.
- The barrel and trim are fully gold-plated, providing a rich, warm tone and substantial feel in hand.
- The iconic Montblanc snowcap emblem is crafted from mother-of-pearl, adding another level of refinement and rarity.
- The 18K gold beak emerging from the craquelé enamel cap is an extraordinary detail rarely seen in writing instruments and makes this pen instantly recognizable to knowledgeable collectors.
Individual Numbering & Rarity
- As part of the exclusive Artisan Collection, this pen bears its own unique individual number engraved on the clip ring:
Artisan No.: 0148L99
- These individually numbered pieces certify authenticity and origin. Production numbers were extremely limited (often cited around 75 pieces worldwide, though not officially confirmed), and these rarely appear for sale on the secondary market.
