We are facing a little west of south. Lake Lucerne is down at our left. Lucerne nestled here by the waterside is visited every summer by thousands of travelers, who come to see the Lake and that jagged, snow-wrapped mountain. This cathedral is said to have been founded in the seventh century. Be sure to notice that quaint old stone tower rising out of the river below that nearest bridge. It is so old that traditions of its purpose are hazily uncertain—most likely it was meant to defend the town against assault from the lake-side, though it may have been a lighthouse (Lucerna) and so have given its name to the town. The curious, crooked structure beyond it is a very old covered bridge.
The fine, large, modern buildings near the water front on both sides of the lake outlet are popular hotels. At the right of the cathedral we see the terminal station of one of the most famous railways in the whole world—the St. Gotthard road which extends from Lucerne here around and over and literally through the Alps (the tunnels aggregate over 23 miles), to Bellinzona, Italy, a little more than a hundred miles away ahead of us. That peak facing us reaches more than a vertical mile up into the sky above the level of the lake. All sorts of fascinating old legends belong to it—chief of these is a tale that those icy cliffs are haunted by the gloomy ghost of Pontius Pilate. For centuries people were afraid to explore its heights, but now a cog-wheel railway takes travelers to the summit for a wide view over miles on miles of mountain peaks (the Bernese Alps) that stand beyond.
