WIRE PRESSPHOTOS
A wire pressphoto is an image transmitted electronically by news agencies (like theAssociated Press or Reuters) over telephone or radio lines to subscribingnewspapers.
Pioneered inthe 1930's this "early fax" technology allowed global newspapers toprint breaking news images on the same day an event occurred.
Because theywere generated to be quickly reproduced by printing presses, the photos areoften printed on thinner, lighter or slicker paper than typical studioportraits.
They usuallyfeature typed paper captions, dates or publishing stamps and can also bebrownish or sepia tone in color.
