For your consideration is an exceptionally large and visually compelling c.1990s East African pictorial batik on cotton, probably Tanzanian, measuring approximately 72.0 by 36.0 inches. Executed entirely by hand using wax-resist dyeing, the work presents a richly animated village scene with women engaged in communal domestic labor, including carrying, pounding, stirring, and processing food or grain beside large vessels and containers. Stylized palms, a monumental central tree, and a rounded thatched dwelling complete the composition, while the bold palette of black, red, ochre, turquoise, purple, and green is set against a pale crackled ground created through characteristic batik wax-resist technique.
The textile belongs to the late-20th-century East African pictorial batik tradition, and its composition, palette, figure types, crackle treatment, and large decorative format are particularly consistent with Tanzanian studio and commercial batik production of the 1990s. Related batiks from Tanzania frequently depict scenes of everyday rural life, especially women engaged in food preparation, carrying, grinding, brewing, and other communal activities. Uganda produced closely related works, so the most precise responsible catalog attribution is East African, probably Tanzanian, rather than an absolute national identification unsupported by a surviving makers label or documented artist signature.
Within the composition is the handwritten inscription Tess + Paul / Jan 99, establishing that the work was completed no later than January 1999. This inscription is best understood as a gift, ownership, or presentation notation rather than the artists signature. The artist therefore remains unidentified. The textile is additionally associated with World Bank exhibition or display provenance in Washington, D.C., a provenance that is entirely consistent with the institutions active presentation of contemporary and regional art during the 1990s, although the exact exhibition entry has not yet been independently matched to a published catalogue.
Preserved in attractive vintage condition with expected minor edge wear, fraying, and handling consistent with an unframed textile of this substantial scale, this work is an impressive example of late-20th-century East African pictorial batik, probably Tanzanian. Its unusually large dimensions, hand-executed wax-resist technique, complex narrative composition, dated 1999 inscription, and reported World Bank exhibition history give it considerably greater interest than smaller decorative batiks and make it particularly suitable for collections of African art, textile art, modern folk and studio art, and institutional exhibition material.
