Vintage Handwoven African Tapestry, Ostriches at Sunset

Large vintage handwoven tapestry wall hanging depicting two ostriches beneath a sprawling savanna tree with a setting sun. This is a true tapestry weave, meaning the image is built into the weave itself and shows through as a mirror image on the reverse.
The piece is woven from hand spun wool in natural undyed tones of cream, grey, brown and black, accented with soft greens and a mustard sun. The ostrich plumage uses a fluffy, lustrous yarn that gives the birds a raised, feathered texture. The long, hairy character of the yarn throughout is typical of the Southern African weaving cooperatives that worked in karakul wool and mohair. There is no maker\'s label, but the style, materials and subject strongly suggest Southern African origin.
Finishing details include seven hanging tabs woven directly into the top edge, a sturdy golden heading band at the top and bottom, and a hand knotted fringe along the bottom. At 9 lbs, this is a substantial piece with real presence on the wall.
