Large Hand-Carved African Wooden Mask – 17.5" – Vintage / Dan-Style Influence
Large, substantial hand-carved African wooden mask measuring approximately 17½" tall × 12" wide × 3½" deep.
The mask features a strongly sculpted human face with a broad forehead, pronounced brows, narrow/downturned eye openings, prominent nose and projecting mouth. The reverse is deeply hollowed and shows extensive hand-carving/tool marks. Two small holes on the sides may have been used for hanging or attachment.
The facial style has visual similarities to West African Dan-style masks, although the exact ethnic group, country of origin, maker, and date are unknown and cannot be confirmed. The original sale listing described it as resembling Central African art styles, but that attribution has not been independently verified.
The wood has a dark brown, aged/worn appearance with extensive surface variation, scratches, abrasions, and other signs of handling/use. Age is unknown; this item is not being represented as a 19th-century or otherwise definitively antique mask.
A compelling piece for collectors of African art, African masks, ethnographic art, folk art, tribal-style decor, hand-carved woodwork, and unusual vintage wall art.
