This is a silver gelatin photograph that is unmounted and is 9½ x 7 inches (240x180mm).
It shows a construction worker wearing a protective face shield and gloves operating a power tool on the rim of a large diameter steel pipe section. The scene depicts the construction of the Eilat-Ashkelon oil pipeline in the Negev desert. Behind the foreground figure, another worker is visible attending to a further section of the pipeline, which stretches back across the rocky, arid terrain.
The back features a typed caption titled "A substitute for the suez canal." It reads in part: "The Suez Canal. . has now been closed for over 2 years - since the time of the Arab-Israeli war of 1967. . This is now beginning to take place, with an oil pipeline running from the Eilat Port to Ashkelon. . the 42 inch pipe will soon be ready to carry 25 million tons of crude oil through the Negev desert each year." There are stamps for "Keystone Press Agency Limited", "Rosenblum Photo & News Service", and "Please Return T.V. Times Picture Library". Handwritten text reads "Israel Industry: Oil".
