On December 25, 1779, Wakefield Plantation, birthplace of George Washington, was destroyed by fire. William Augustine Washington, nephew of GW and then heir to the plantation, proceeded to salvage the bricks from Wakefield and use them in the construction of his new home known as Haywood Plantation, 2 miles north on the Potomac River.
Today, due to coastal erosion, nothing remains of Haywood except a rubble strewn field of bricks on the bottom of the Potomac River.
Over the past 15 years I’ve been able to salvage several dozen of these bricks.
Comes with descriptive plaque and signed and numbered testament as to origins of bricks.
