General View of Eastern Jefferson Barracks, MO Postcard # R-70737:
$11.25

This is a linen-era topographical postcard featuring a panoramic view of Jefferson Barracks in Missouri. Based on the "C.T. American Art" branding and the production code (R-70737), we can pinpoint its origins fairly accurately.

Detailed Description

  • Subject: "General View of Eastern Jefferson Barracks, MO."

  • Publisher: Published and copyrighted by Maserang & Ledford, Jefferson Barracks, MO.

  • Printer: Printed by Curt Teich & Co. (Chicago) as part of their "C.T. American Art" series.

  • Era: Circa 1915–1925. While "linen" postcards are most famous in the 1930s and 40s, this specific "American Art" blue-tinted back and the production number suggest the late "White Border" to early "Linen" transition period.

  • Visuals: The front shows a hand-colored lithograph view of the brick military buildings, barracks, and grounds overlooking the Mississippi River in the distance.

  • Condition: Based on the photos, the card is in Excellent (EX) to Near Mint unused condition. It has crisp corners (save for a tiny bump on the top left), no postal cancellations, and no writing on the back.

Estimated Value

In the current collector's market, the value for this specific card is:

Value Factors:

  • Demand: Jefferson Barracks is a significant historical site (one of the oldest US military posts west of the Mississippi), which gives it "crossover" appeal to both postcard collectors and military history buffs.

  • Condition: Since the card is unposted and the colors remain vibrant with no major creases, it sits at the higher end of the price spectrum.

  • Scarcity: This is not an exceedingly rare card, but finding it in clean, unmailed condition makes it more desirable for collectors.

Historical Context

Jefferson Barracks served as a major recruitment and medical hub during WWI and WWII. Postcards like these were often sold at the "Post Exchange" (PX) for soldiers to send home to family, though this particular one likely sat in a souvenir album or a shop drawer for decades.
