This is a highly-collectible and rare thermoplastic daguerreotype case manufactured by Kinsley & Parker in 1858. You can see that both of the hinges are broken and that the case is in two pieces. Still, it is very rare to find a quarter plate case in this desirable design in any condition. You can see as well from the photos that some of the thermoplastic pieces are missing from the case at the site of the hinges. It also has a chip on one of the corners, and on one top rail there is a substantial fleabite visible. The thermoplastic is not dried out and the case looks like new when you put both case halves together and hold it in your hand. The thermoplastic is still shiny and bright.
This daguerreotype case was manufactured by Kinsley & Parker. Hinge patented June 1st, 1858 from the printed original factory label in the well of the case.
This case is I-43 in Paul Berg\'s book of daguerreotype cases; its name is Lyre in window portrait. This firm operated out of Stoughton, MA. They patented their iconic, innovative round daguerreotype case hinges in 1858.
This case would be a fine addition to your collection of early images. This design is nearly impossible to find in the quarter plate size.
