THE MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL, FIFTH AVENUE AND ONE HUNDREDTH STREET,NEW YORK,July 20th 1907 /4h 30. p.m. -Dear Laura -I have a miserable r...... case and although I believe the eye is irretrievably lost I stay in town. Met Bookman this morning and agreed to go to Long Beach or Far Rockaway tomorrow to take an ocean bath. For coming to C. I. for a few hours the trip is too hard and trains not convenient. - I will send Quinine & Bromide by mail and the cookies will have to wait for another week. - Hope you and the children are well. - Wonder whether they miss me. - Give Dr Fr. 50 cts my share for last week fishing expedition expenses. - Kiss youCarl. - HISTORICAL INFORMATION -the author of this letter is Dr. Carl Koller. Hewas a famous Austrian-born ophthalmologist who discovered the use of cocaine as a local anesthetic. After moving to New York, he became the Chief of Ophthalmology at Mount Sinai Hospital—which perfectly matches the stationary, the date (1907), and his mention of a miserable case where the "eye is irretrievably lost.".The letter notes meeting "Bookman" this morning. Dr. Samuel Bookman was the head of the Chemistry Department at Mount Sinai Hospital during this exact period (appointed in 1902), and historical records show him collaborating with Dr. Koller on clinical cases at Mount Sinai. The letter is signed "Carl" at the bottom right. While his name is often spelled "Karl" in historical texts due to his Austrian roots, he frequently signed his personal and professional correspondences in the United States as "Carl."One of Koller's patients was a blind ten-year-old boy named Chauncey D. Leake. Leake recovered his sight and, as an adult, discovered the anesthetic divinyl ether.Sigmund Freud reportedly nicknamed Koller "Coca Koller" because of his association with cocaine, referencing the soft drink Coca-Cola which included cocaine at the time...
