Their role includes performing high risk arrests and search warrants, vehicle interdictions, close protection for VIPs and specialist surveillance operations. The DEA\'s SRT capability was officialy standardised in 2016. Existing units included Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) (which grew out of the Foreign-deployed Advisory and Support Team (FAST) program and were disbanded in 2017), Mobile Enforcement Teams (MET), Regional Enforcement Teams (RET) and Highrisk Entry Apprehension Team (HEAT).Each major DEA domestic office maintains a SRT capability.DEA SRT weapons include Rock River LAR-15 (AR-15 derivative) and Glock 17 and 19 9mm pistols.SRT operators undergo an inital SRT Certification Course (SCC) (11 day basic, 5 day advanced) at U.S. Army Base Ft. A.P. Hill in Virginia. The DEA is a Federal law enforcement agency tasked with combating drug smuggling in the United States.TheFBI Hostage Rescue Team(HRT) is thecounter-terrorismand hostage rescue unit of theFederal Bureau of Investigation. The HRT is trained to rescue American citizens and allies who are held by hostile forces, usuallyterroristsand/or criminals. The Hostage Rescue Team was founded in 1982 byDanny Coulson, former Deputy Assistant Director of the FBI, and completed its final certification exercise in October 1983.The HRT\'s purpose is to serve as a domestic counter-terrorism unit, offering a tactical resolution option in hostage and high-risk law enforcement situations. It was originally composed of 50 operators. However, this number has since increased to well over 90 full-time operators. The HRT commonly functions as a nationalSWATteam in highly sensitive or dangerous situations. Today, it is part of the Tactical Support Branch of the FBI\'sCritical Incident Response Group(CIRG) and is based at theFBI Academyat theQuantico Marine Corps Base, inStafford County, Virginia. The primary mission of the DEA Special Response Team is to provide rapid response and specialized tactical support to DEA operations nationwide. SRT operators are trained to handle a variety of high-risk situations, including apprehending armed and dangerous suspects, securing evidence, and protecting DEA personnel and assets during enforcement operations.
The DEA Special Response Team is structured similarly to other specialized tactical units within law enforcement agencies. It consists of highly trained and skilled personnel organized into teams with specific roles and responsibilities. Key components of the SRT structure include:
- Tactical Operators: SRT operators undergo rigorous training in firearms, tactical maneuvers, close-quarters combat, and other specialized skills necessary for conducting high-risk operations. They are equipped with advanced weaponry, protective gear, and specialized equipment to carry out their duties effectively and safely.
- Tactical Leaders: Each SRT team is led by experienced tactical leaders who oversee operations, provide guidance to team members, and make critical decisions in dynamic and challenging environments. Tactical leaders possess advanced training and expertise in tactical operations and leadership.
- Support Personnel: In addition to tactical operators and leaders, the SRT may include support personnel with specialized skills, such as medics, communications specialists, and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) technicians. These individuals provide essential support and expertise to enhance the team\'s capabilities and ensure mission success..
