PROPERTIES: Cuprite from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), particularly from the Mashamba West Mine in the Kolwezi region, is famous for producing some of the world's finest specimens. These cuprites are highly prized for their deep red color, gemmy and sharp octahedral crystals, excellent metallic luster, and bright, glowing appearance when back-lit. Specimens are often found in combination with other copper minerals like chrysocolla, malachite, and quartz, which provide beautiful color contrast. Cuprite is a mineral that belongs to the oxide mineral group. It is composed of copper oxide, with the chemical formula Cu2O. Cuprite on the MOHS scale, has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.0.
