This token carries a replica of a patriot flag on the front, an historical American flag with a yellow field and a timber rattlesnake coiled and ready to strike. Often referred to as the Gadsden Flag, it was named after Christopher Gadsden, a South Carolinian delegate to the Continental Congress who designed the flag in 1775, during the American Revolution.
On the reverse is the first Continental Cartoon from none other than Ben Franklin, who, in 1754, during the French and Indian war, published "Join, or Die", a woodcut of a snake cut into eight sections, in his Pennsylvania Gazette newspaper. It represented the colonies, with New England at the head and South Carolina at the tail, following their order along the coast, and urged the colonies to "Join or Die"....with the patriots who first proposed Independence from England.
