Civil War Patriotic Cover Seated Liberty We Must Protect the Union PAID 3:
$125.00

Civil War Patriotic Cover Seated Liberty We Must Protect the Union! PAID 3
Attractive Civil War-era patriotic cover featuring a seated figure of Liberty wrapped in the American flag and holding a Liberty staff, printed in red and blue. Beneath the illustration is the patriotic slogan “We must protect the Union!”
The cover bears a circular PAID 3 postal marking and is addressed to Miss Pauline Miller, Care of Miss Sophia Barker, Worcester, Mass.
Especially interesting is faint period pencil writing across the lower portion of the cover. Portions appear to read “B. Fitzgibbon” and “9th Regt.”, followed by additional notation that has not been positively deciphered. The writing is shown clearly in the photographs and may reward further research by a Civil War specialist.
A handsome and evocative Union patriotic design with possible military association. Overall condition is quite good for a Civil War-era cover, with expected age toning, edge/corner wear and minor handling wear as shown. Please examine the detailed scans for condition and markings.
From the collection of Dr. Allan C. “Doc” Johnson (1889-1941) of Clinton, Massachusetts, an active stamp collector during the early 20th century. Doc's collection has remained with his family for more than eight decades.
