This photo is of ALICE FOX GERSTER (1885-1971), her brother AUSTEN HOPPIN FOX (1877-1946), and their cousin AUSTEN FOX RIGGS (1876-1940)This photo is not identifiedon the back, but matches known photos of these children. (I am not positive which boy is which).This stunning image is in landscape format and features young Alice between her brother and cousin, leaning on one of their shoulders. She is adorned in lace, and the other boy has a polka dot die and looks away from the camera.
The photographer of this image: Rockwood, 1440 Broadway, NY New York (although from the same photo session as others that hae a 17 Union Square address on them; I am guessing they didn't have landscape cards with their updated address on them.)*Rockwood studio was run by George G. Rockwood, who popularized the carte de viste (CDV) in America), and his brother Elihu R. Rockwood, a famous war photographer. They photographed the elite society of New York City in this era, including movie stars, politicians, and other rich and famous individuals.*Employed with them as well for some time was William Kurtz, pioneer of halftone printing of color photographs. {Note that some of the cabinet cards that I have obtained from the Gerster/Fox estate are by Kurtz, and are available in my other listings.}*Alice Fox (1885-1971) & brother Austen Hoppin Fox (1877-1946) were the children of the affluent New York lawyer Austen George Fox (1849-1937) and Alice Hoppin Fox (1857-1933)*Their cousin Austen Fox Riggs (1876-1940) was the son of Austen George Fox's sister Rebecca Fox Riggs and Benjamin C Riggs. He was a pioneer in the field of psychiatry and founder of the Austen Riggs Center.*Alice would marry John Carl Arpad Gerster (1881-1874), one of the founders of The American Cancer Society, originally American Society for the Control of Cancer, which was first headquartered at his childhood home, 34 E 75th St NYC.{See my other listings for Gerster family photos}Antique photograph.
