An Original Civil War Copy Return for Captain John M Deane's Company K, 29th Massachusetts , issued Feb 26, 1865 listing changes in roll of men & officers issued "Near Petersburg, Va", Feb 26, 1865 naming men absent, sick, or "in confinement at Fort Delaware, and Private Michael Grenier who "Deserted to the Enemy from Picket-line" Feb 16th.".
The Return was issued by Sergeant Robert N Blackhall, commanding in the absence of Captain Deane.
Comes with service info- Private Grenier served 6 months with the 29th but but apparently had enough and deserted, with no further records of his whereabouts, or reason for his desertion but as he joined in August,1864 was likely a conscript. Captain John M Deane served with the 29th Massachusetts and was also the Brigade Officer in charge of maintaining the defenses in the vicinity of Fort Stedman, Petersburg, Virginia.This Copy Letter along with other papers in Captain Deane's hand was obtained from his estate.
Deane was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor defending his post at Fort Stedman during Lee's last Confederate Offensive, March 25, 1865. Postwar Captain Deane was Grand Army GAR Post Commander at Falls River, Mass. He is buried at his boyhood hometown, Freetown Massachusetts. 2pp 16 x 11" ptd/ink, w minor age stains, Overall VG.
