CIVIL WAR NORTH CAROLINA 12TH NEW YORK CAVALRY CAMP PALMER:
$145.00

An Original Civil War Letter from Sergeant Edwin T Scott of Cuba, New York, serving with the 12th NY Cavalry at Camp Palmer, North Carolina, dated April 9th 1864 to "My Dear Lola" He reports they have finished our camp - the tents raised 4 ft high with ground poles like a log cabin, and tent makes a good roof for our "small stockade", and he even has room for a small table. He longs for the expiration of his term of service, has given up hope that the War will end soon but hopes it may be his good fortune to outlive this and to see her face again, also see our dear littte one. He writes that he misses Lola"s "laughing and roguish eyes which I suppose have grown more sedate and womanly, during the two years that have transformed you from the girl I loved so well to the woman , wife and mother" ". He says he has received letters from Aunt Mina, , "a very smart woman and a model housekeeper" in Wisconsin. He reports Lola"s letter was mis-sent to New Orleans as she did not name the regiment on the address. He ex[plains that he has not been paid so is "using government waste paper" for stationary . He continues the letter on April 10, complaining that there is still no mail from her and sends his love to Kate, Carrie, Charley, Rosa & Sam, and "Kiss Little Lucy for me". He further exhorts her to avoid those who have no self-respect.and complains that "there are Many vicious and evil persons in the Army here". He repeats his hopes the War will end soon, and to see again the "bright face and pure heart" that awaits him and that he sees her "affectionate and innocent face" in his dreams. He ends the letter "Your affectionate husband- E.T. Scott", with a postscript regarding her money situation- He is willing for her to stay at Richburg and visit our relations in Cuba, and ends with a postscript simply signed "Ed" 2pp 10 x 14" ink, written on a portion of an army Morning Report. Minor edge wear, overall VG . Th letter comes with a complete typed transcript and Service Info-he continued in the Army until the War's End. The 12th NY Cavalry fought in North Carolina-Edwin was one of the 12th NY Cavalrymen who escaped capture at Plymouth, North Carolina. His wife "Lola" (Celora's) brother William H Stebbins, 85th New York, was captured at Plymouth and died a POW at Andersonville Prison.
