Description
An important and rare visual record of early twentieth-century railway construction in Brazil, these photographs were taken by Frederico Lange, a German-Brazilian photographer active in Ponta Grossa, Paraná.
Lange was commissioned by the Brazilian government between 1896 and 1912 to document the expansion of infrastructure in the south, particularly the São Paulo–Rio Grande Railway.
This suite of five photographs includes scenes of labourers at work, heavy machinery in rugged terrain, and notably a derailed and crashed locomotive. The clarity and detail are strong, and the decorative mounts with embossed or printed Lange studio marks confirm the attribution.
Original Brazilian industrial photographs of this scale are uncommon, and surviving groups are particularly desirable when preserved as a coherent set.
Notes
The São Paulo–Rio Grande Railway formed part of Brazil’s broader effort to modernise and economically integrate the southern states, linking São Paulo with Paraná and Santa Catarina across difficult terrain.
These photographs document not only engineering works but also the realities of labour and infrastructure development within a major South American project at the turn of the twentieth century.
The group will appeal to collectors of Brazilian photography, railway history, industrial subjects, and early documentary photography.
