This is an especially attractive example of a late Victorian publisher's decorative cloth binding. The vivid mustard-yellow cloth is decorated with an elaborate black floral design extending across both boards and spine, complemented by bright gilt lettering on the spine. The combination creates a particularly handsome display copy and reflects the high standard of American publisher's bindings of the late nineteenth century.

While the novel itself was intended for young readers, the primary appeal today is the decorative binding. Collectors of Victorian cloth bindings, nineteenth-century decorative books, and Lee & Shepard publications will appreciate the unusually fresh appearance of this copy.
