Antique engraved U.M.C. Co. No. 50 XL cartridge case souvenir. This antique brass cartridge case has been modified with a suspension loop and has been filled with lead, making it unusually heavy for its size.
The cartridge is hand engraved:
"Alabama Ave. and Broadway"
"East New York"
"Jan. 20th–28th, 1895"
The engraved inscription references Alabama Avenue and Broadway in East New York, Brooklyn, together with the dates January 20–28, 1895. These dates coincide with the period of the Great Brooklyn Trolley Strike of 1895, a major labor dispute involving Brooklyn street railway workers. While the exact purpose and origin of this piece remain unknown, the inscription, location, and dates suggest a possible connection to events occurring in Brooklyn during that period. The unusual engraved cartridge case form and historical inscription make this an intriguing piece of New York City transportation and labor history.
The base is marked "U.M.C. Co." and "No. 50 XL" for the Union Metallic Cartridge Company.
This item shows wear including scratches, discoloration, tarnishing, oxidation, staining, surface residue, engraving wear, and signs of age and use throughout. The brass cartridge case has been filled with lead and is heavy for its size. We have not attempted to open, remove the contents, or otherwise alter the item. This item measures approximately 2.625" long.
