Antique U.S. militia officer’s ceremonial sword believed to date to the late nineteenth century, approximately 1870–1900.
The steel blade measures approximately 34 inches and bears a walking bear maker’s mark, a trademark commonly attributed by collectors to the Solingen maker Abraham Küller of Wald or a closely related successor. Similar Solingen blades were imported into the United States during the late nineteenth century and mounted on American militia and ceremonial officer’s swords.
The sword features an ornate steel hilt with a Roman helmet pommel and an ivory-colored grip over a wooden core. Based on its construction and age, the grip appears to be an early composition material rather than solid ivory, although the exact material has not been scientifically identified.
The overall design is consistent with U.S. militia and ceremonial officer’s swords produced during the late nineteenth century. While I have not been able to attribute this example to a specific American outfitter or regulation pattern, it represents a quality period piece featuring an imported Solingen blade with the desirable walking bear maker’s mark.
Condition
The blade shows expected age-related wear, scattered surface oxidation, and patina consistent with its age. The ivory-colored grip has chips and losses to the outer composition, exposing the underlying wooden core in places. The steel hilt shows age-appropriate wear and patina.
