Antique c.1900 The Clark Heater No. 5B Carriage Foot WarmerReally exceptional survivor from the horse-drawn carriage and very early automobile era. This is The Clark Heater No. 5B, made by the Chicago Flexible Shaft Co. These heaters used a heated carbon brick inside the removable drawer to keep passengers’ feet warm while traveling in carriages, sleighs and early automobiles. The condition is what makes this one special. The green fabric is fully intact and remarkably well preserved, both handles are present, the heater drawer is intact, and there is even an old carbon/fuel block still inside. The maker stamping remains readable as well.I’m also including a Carriage Museum of America newsletter discussing these historic foot warmers and showing a Clark Heater illustrated in Carriage Monthly in November 1900.There is age, oxidation and surface rust on the exposed metal, but overall this is by far one of the nicest surviving examples of this type I’ve come across.Great piece for an antique car, carriage, sleigh, transportation or Americana collection.
