Original antique mounted photograph by the well-known Oxford photographer Henry William Taunt (1842–1922) of Henry W. Taunt & Co, Oxford.
The image shows a rural church with a prominent tower and spire, surrounded by trees and what appears to be a churchyard. Photographer’s credit printed on the mount: “Photographed by Henry W. Taunt & Co Oxford”.
Henry Taunt was Oxford’s most prolific Victorian and Edwardian photographer. He operated studios in Cornmarket Street, Broad Street and High Street, later working from his home “Rivera” on Cowley Road. He is especially noted for his photographs of Oxford, Oxfordshire churches, villages and the River Thames, and he published numerous illustrated guides. Large collections of his work are held by Historic England and Oxfordshire History Centre.
This is an original period print (likely albumen or early gelatin silver) mounted on its original card mount. Typical of Taunt’s commercial output sold from his Oxford shops.
Condition:
Image shows expected fading and some spotting/foxing consistent with age (visible in photos).
Mount has some wear, light marks and age toning.
No major tears or damage to the photograph itself.
Overall a good original example of Taunt’s work.
Approximate overall size of mount: around 10–11 inches wide by 8–9 inches high (please see tape measure photos for exact dimensions). Photograph itself is smaller within the mount.
A nice piece of Oxford local history or for collectors of Victorian photography and church architecture.
