Antique Hand Painted American Satsuma – Incense Burner (Koro) with Reticulated Cover- Art Deco - Artist Signed 1913
Weare pleased to offer from our personal collection this antique hand paintedAmerican Satsuma incense burner with a reticulated cover. The body of theburner is hand painted with stylized floral patterns that were popular duringits period. The artist took meticulous care in applying the gold dots and inpainting the reticulated vented cover. This is a handsome example in a form that is rarely foundin American Satsuma wares. It stands on three feet which are gilded with gold. The artist has signed it with gold paint on theunderside of the body with a long L and smaller letters in a downward manner. It is dated ‘1913’. Some of the letters are difficult to read, making itillegible. Perhaps someone recognizes the signature and will be kind enough tolet us know so we can share it.
Chinapainting was popular at the turn of the 19th and early 20th century. Studios and artists usuallyobtained their china porcelain blanks from France and or Germany. But during theFirst World War it was impossible to obtain china blanks from these sources, sostudios began importing heavier pottery blanks from Japan. About this time, theArts and Craft Movement inspired many Art Deco, Art Nouveau designs. These designs were incorporated on the pottery blanks which we now refer to as ‘AmericanSatsuma’. American china painting during this time period is harder to find and is very desirable, especially on unusual blanks. If you collect American hand painted Satsuma wares, this will be a great addition to your collection!
