This imposinglarge folio, approximately 12 × 14½ inches, is bound in royal-blue cloth with a brilliant pictorial design in gilt and multiple colors,signed “Engel Rel.” on the front cover, with gilt spine lettering andall edges gilt. It is an exceptional example ofBelle Époque French decorative book designand displays beautifully as an object in its own right.
The 92-page volume contains40 chromotypogravure color compositions by Maurice Leloir, including numerous full-page illustrations ofLouis XIV, Versailles, French court life and ceremony, costume, military scenes, naval subjects, and royal pageantry. The richness of Leloir’s historical illustration is particularly well matched to the elaborate publisher’s binding.
